"One of Canada’s hottest acts in both bop and pop circles for many years, and it’s obvious why" - "One of Canada's A-List pianists" (CFRB Radio,) Toronto pianist, composer, arranger Ron Davis is more committed than ever to making great music, great jazz. Lawyer-turned-PhD Graduate-turned-Professor, Ron has come a long way to find his life's passion. Throughout his professional incarnations, music was never far from his mind, "It's in my soul- I have to play" he admits. Ron's musical roots are planted in stride piano and swing, though he's retained a clean and straightforward style. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music, before starting to play professional in the 1970's. Ron also studied with the late Darwyn Aitken, a student of classical great David Saperton and jazz legend Oscar Peterson. These early influences are reflected in the style and tone of Ron's vibrant musical creations. Music critics have compared Davis's technique and enthusiasm to a young Oscar Peterson, his compositions to early Dave Brubeck, and his virtuoso flashes to Errol Garner and Art Tatum. "Being compared to my musical idol- Art Tatum- is incredibly humbling" Davis admits. "But, if it means that my passion is coming through when I'm on stage- then that it's fantastic." Not surprisingly, Ron is in high demand. He and his collaborators have performed all over the world, including three tours of Japan (click here for Ron's Japanese website), winning over critics and music lovers alike. Ron's solo work was featured as the opening act for jazz great Dave Holland's quintet,. He was chosen as one of 10 pianists in radio JazzFM's Flying Fingers piano gala. He is frequently heard on national radio. Reviewing one of Ron's recordings, CDBaby.com, proclaimed, "if you like jazz, you're going to fall in love". About his latest recording Subarashii Live, Wholenote magazine rated in "Awesome", while AllAboutJazz.com called it "lyrical... stunning... compelling." Ron is philosophic about the acclaim, "Well, I just hope everyone comes out for a show!" Keep your eyes, and ears, open for Ron Davis's next gig. Prepare for love at first... sound. |
